Ondo primary: Youths urge Tinubu to be neutral

A group of youths under the auspices of Ondo Progressive Coalition has called on the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu to desist from any alleged plan to impose a candidate on the party ahead of its governorship primary in Ondo State.
The primary is slated for August 27.
Recently, Tinubu was accused by some APC governorship aspirants in the state, of planning to impose Dr. Segun Abraham (one of the aspirants) as the candidate of the party for the November 26 governorship election. The group, in a statement issued by its chairman, Mr. Adewetan Vincent, also called on Tinubu and the state chairman of the party, Mr. Isaac Kekemeke to let the candidate of the emerge through free and fair primary.
It stated that the imposition of a candidate on the party would do more harm than good for the party in the governorship election.
According to the group, the alleged imposition is having negative effects on APC and its members.
The statement said, “If we are tired of being in the opposition, then we must speak up against any development that can affect the fortune of the party in the coming election. We reiterate that the party must conduct a free, fair and transparent primary, devoid of any influence of our leaders. The candidate of the party must emerge on his own merit.
“This will prove to the people of Ondo State that our party has departed from the old ACN’s (defunct Action Congress of Nigeria) method that set the party on the path of failure. Apart from this, free, fair and transparent primary will promote mutual symbolic relationship among the contestants.”
The group also urged national and state leadership of the party to be neutral on the issue of who emerges as the party flag bearer and also to desist from any act that could bring about insinuation that an aspirant would be hand-picked before the primary.
“Before it is too late, we call on all the party leaders and our governorship aspirants to embrace free, fair and transparent primary as promised by our leaders,” it said.
Meanwhile, a group, Ondo Youth Coalition, has described the administration of Olusegun Mimiko as the most innovative and successful in the history of Ondo state.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the group, the Mimiko-led government has brought development to the state.
“The Mother and Child Hospitals, the urban renewal success which earned the governor a United Nations Scroll of honour, cocoa revolution and the government’s job creation activities, as powered by its wealth creation agency as well as its economic diversification programmes have attracted global attention.
“Before now, no programme of note had warranted other states in the country to visit Ondo with the sole aim to understudy it, but there are such visits under the Mimiko-led government, with the latest being Kogi state,” it said.
